| Pie Baking Contest - August 4th, 2007 |
|
|

Saturday was a scorcher at the Clayton Farmer’s Market at Straub’s with temperatures in the 90s, but the Market was buzzing with activity. Crowds lined up to get first picks of produce and Pie Contest entrants arrived by 10 am.
A Chocolate Pie entry was creatively packaged on top of frozen vegetables, while a Blueberry Nectarine Pie was still warm from the oven. Everyone enjoyed the tasting festivities.
All pies were judged on the basis of appearance and taste by a panel of “pie fans” and experts. The winner received a Walk with the Clayton Market Master to meet the farmers and $50 toward the purchase of items at the Farmer’s Market.

The Pie Panel of expert judges were (as pictured, from left to right):
Steve Lichtenfeld, Clayton Ward 3 Alderman
JoAnn Williams, Straub’s chef
City of Clayton Mayor Linda Goldstein
Janice Denham, Food and Home Editor of the Suburban Journal
Kara Krekeler, Arts Editor of the Clayton Word.
Marcia Mermelstein (not pictured), known as The Pie Lady and a regular vendor at the Market, also served as a judge.

Drumroll…And the winners are (as pictured, from left to right):
Toby Chod, 2nd runner up with Mama’s Chocolate Pie
Emily Barron, 1st place with Blueberry Nectarine Pie
